Designed as an alternative to existing steel, concrete & wooden side boards, the
Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) Ballast Panel / Board brings great benefits and
efficiencies to the process of installation combined with a low life-cycle cost.

Suitable for new projects or end of life board replacement the GRP system is typically used to retain track ballast on
bridges and to protect track-side facilities on embankments. Non-metallic construction makes them nil scrap value to
thieves.

Much lighter in weight than traditionally used materials, but just as strong, the panels can be produced to withstand
all required loading capacities.  They are easier to transport, quicker to install and offer a zero maintenance, long life
span.

All sizes are manufactured to order with an option of integrated post & handrail system.

Background

The use of composite materials for infrastructure renewals and improvements on the UK's railway system has
gathered pace in recent years. GRP systems have benefits which show clear advantages over alternative proposals
(steel, concrete & timber), with a combination of desirable characteristics:

  • Corrosion resistance
  • High strength
  • Light weight
  • Maintenance free
  • Low life cycle costs
  • Rapid fit times
  • Insulating properties (electrically non-conductive)

Benefits of GRP Ballast Panels / Boards include:

  • Rapid installation - reduced possession time & labour costs
  • Realistic lead times for bespoke made panel sets - typically 12-16 weeks
  • Designed to withstand high loading forces
  • Nil scrap value
  • Maintenance free
  • Long design life
  • Lighter than concrete or steel - easier trackside handling
  • Can be made to any colour - green or grey as standard
  • Choice of stainless steel or galvanised fasteners (if required)

Applications GRP Ballast Panels / Boards include:

  • Retention of track ballast on bridges / viaducts
  • Protection of track-side cabinets & facilities built into embankments

High strength GRP one-piece bonded panels:

  • Sizes made to order - typical lengths between 1220 mm -  3660 mm
  • Finished thickness - typically 65mm
  • Colour - Grey / Green or any RAL colour
  • Fire retardant - ASTM Class 1
  • Wide operating temperature range -50oC to +100oC
  • High load bearing capacity - in-service characteristics available on request
  • Integrated GRP post support system
  • Integrated safety handrail
